As a continuation of the Academy's program of ongoing
educational and cultural exchange with Cuban film artists, the
Academy is partnering with the Los Angeles Film Festival's Cuban
Spotlight to present a special evening celebrating recent Cuban
cinema. The Academy gala will feature film clips from all the
Cuban titles showcased by the Festival and an onstage panel
discussion with visiting directors. Hosted by Los Angeles Film
Festival Artistic director David Ansen, participants (subject to
availability) will include directors Gerardo Chijona Valdes
(Ticket to Paradise), Fina Torres (Habana Eva),
Fernando Pérez (Suite Habana), and Estela Bravo
(Operation Peter Pan: Flying Back to Cuba). The
program will conclude with a screening of Cuba's Oscar-nominated,
Strawberry and Chocolate, which centers on a young gay
artist's attraction to, and resulting friendship with, a committed
(and straight) communist. This film was highly praised by American
reviewers, who were surprised by such a sophisticated and frank
treatment of politics and sexuality in a Cuban film. The
evening's screening will take place in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn
Theater on Wednesday, June 22, at 7:30 pm. Tickets are
$5/person for the general public and $3 for Academy members and
students with a valid ID. For additional information, please
call (310) 247-3600 or click on Events & Exhibitions at www.oscars.org.
