Donald “Don” McLean III was born in New Rochelle (New York) in 1945 and is a singer and songwriter. He began his musical journey by listening to Frank Sinatra and Buddy Holly but his tastes soon changed to folk music (especially the second album by folk music quartet, The Weavers). He took music lessons, bought his first guitar when he was 16, and started to make contacts in the music business. He actually called Fred Hellerman (one of the original members of The Weavers) one day to ask if he could visit him. Fred agreed and they became good friends.
Fred’s described him as having “the most remarkable music memory of anyone I've ever known.” Don’s musical style can be best described as folk rock; a style that arose in the United States and the United Kingdom around the mid-1960s, pioneered by the Los Angeles band the Byrds, who began playing traditional folk music and songs by Bob Dylan with rock instrumentation, in a style heavily influenced by the Beatles and other British bands. He’s had a stellar career with 20 studio albums and in 2004, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
