The Manhattan Transfer was formed in New York City in 1969 by singer Timothy DuPron Hauser. He recruited Erin Dickins, Marty Nelson, Pat Rosalia, and Gene Pistilli to complete the line up and named the group after the eponymous novel by John Dos Passos. The group's been through many line up changes over the years and it currently consists of currently consists of Alan Paul, Janis Siegel, Cheryl Bentyne, Trist Curless, and Yaron Gershovsky.

Their musical style is best described as a blend of vocal jazz (an instrumental approach to the voice, where the singer can match the instruments in their stylistic approach to the lyrics, improvised or otherwise, or through scat singing), contemporary jazz (a genre usually characterized by some combination of fusion music, pop jazz, smooth jazz, crossover jazz, and contemporary funk), adult contemporary, and AM pop (the dominant sound of Top 40 AM radio during the 1960s and '70s). They've had a stellar career with 29 studio albums, 19 singles, and their music has also been featured on the soundtracks of the films A League of Their Own, Swing Kids, and Schöner Gigolo, armer Gigolo. They've won multiple Grammy Awards and they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1998.
