Set in 1147, HILDEGARD follows German Benedictine abbess, polymath, and composer St. Hildegard von Bingen as she begins receiving divine visions. Defying the threat of excommunication, she enlists fellow nun Richardis von Stade to help illuminate her manuscripts. As their creative partnership deepens into something profoundly transformative, the two women must confront a world determined to silence them.
A meditation on faith, artistry, and the yearning for connection—to the divine, to humanity, and to oneself—HILDEGARD captures the timeless struggle between spiritual calling and human constraint.
This highly anticipated world premiere marks LA Opera’s 17th groundbreaking collaboration with Beth Morrison Projects, hailed by the Financial Times as “a driving force behind America’s thriving opera scene.” With a libretto by Sarah Kirkland Snider—named by The Washington Post among the “Top 35 Female Composers in Classical Music”—and immersive visual design by Deborah Johnson, HILDEGARD brings to life the story of two visionary women determined to make their voices heard.
